PRT 510: Active Recreation and Community Health
Course Description: This course focuses on the association of active recreation in communities and community health. Students explore individual, social, community, environmental, and policy factors that affect community health and the contribution of recreation and park programs and facilities.
Reflection: I signed up for this elective because in my current position, I oversee NCRPA’s wellness program (http://www.healthyparksnc.org/) and supervise the graduate student who coordinates the program. This course has already helped me to enhance the work of NCRPA’s wellness program, and support parks and recreation departments across the state in promoting active recreation in their community. What I enjoyed most about this class were the unique tools and assessment strategies taught, the CPAT and iSOPARC were my two favorite assignments as they required me to get outside and both evaluate and reflect on local parks in my community. This class also reinforced my interest in planning, placemaking and healthy active communities.
